Défauts des Bois, connaissance & appréhension

(Richard Fays, 2018)

Knowing and recognizing wood defects, and how to deal with them for better forest management.

This book reviews wood defects and their impact on the sale and use of forest products, and highlights the need to work upstream: to know what the defects are, how to identify them, and how to deal with them in order to improve forest management.

Forêts et plantations, une culture

(Richard Fays, 2018)

Richly illustrated, this book is a real plea for trees and forests. Drawing parallels between plantations and forests in temperate and tropical zones, without hiding his attraction for agroforestry, the author reviews the different management methods and the countless assets and uses of forests, some of which are truly unsuspected.

He also deals with the fight against disasters, while remaining convinced that human responsibility is largely involved.

Forêts & Plantations, une culture par Richard Fays

"A forest is a kind of vast open-air casino where the forester takes long-term bets; and as a gambler will rarely stake all his assets on a single wager, the obligation to review certain aspects of management along the way is a necessity.

Richard Fays

Wood defects” is a generic term used by the profession to define what are ultimately nothing more than peculiarities, inherent to the species, developed by the trees themselves, caused by insects, fungi, impromptu events or even human action.
These “defects”, which sometimes turn out to be qualities, can in some cases be eradicated, in others not, but very often it is possible to anticipate and combat them.

To understand them, you need to know what they are and be able to identify them; that's the aim of this book.

«We all too often tend to forget that ecosystems are in a perpetual state of adaptation, as Nature does not reproduce identical cycles year after year.

It is therefore necessary to constantly adapt to the conditions dictated by nature, which we tend too often to want to dominate at will. The agricultural and forestry professions are those of the land, and have always been practised by simple people who were attached to the value of the land, and who instinctively knew their trade. For several years now, this sector, which has become largely industrialized, has become a financial environment where the stakes are high. These activities linked to Nature (...) require time and patience, terms that don't fit in with the demands of finance and technocrats, no doubt brilliant, but not always inspired at best.».
